HYGGE: THE COZY WAY TO LIVE
HYGGE: THE COZY WAY TO LIVE
Hygge is a Danish word for feeling cozy, content, and comfortable at home by yourself or with friends. In Denmark, the winters are long, dark, and cold. The hygge movement was adopted to emphasize and celebrate the little moments, in a warm atmosphere with good company. Danes incorporated this idea into their lifestyle to fight the dark winter days outside by creating a warm and cozy atmosphere inside.
Since many people are going to be inside again this winter, with limited outside exposure due to the effects of covid-19— I would suggest using some of these practices to make this winter great. Hygge is something I have been incorporating into my everyday routine little by little. After incorporating the hygge lifestyle, it has helped me curate an atmosphere of warmth and contentment, while also helping me realize how to celebrate the little victories in life.
So how does one achieve the basics when incorporating a hygge lifestyle in the wintertime? Well luckily for you, I created the ultimate hygge guide to help you be more cozy and content this winter!
Hygge Lifestyle Tips
1) Flickering Lights & Candles
Nothing creates a warm atmosphere like flickering lights and candles. The warm glow of candlelight and your favorite scent filling the room is a recipe for happiness. Here are a few of my fav candles to get inspired:
2) Cozy Setting & Greenery
Hygge encourages you to surround yourself with blankets, pillows, and plant friends in order to give your space some life and plushness on those colder days.
3) Loungewear
Dress COMFY!! Bright and natural colored lounge sets can be a fun way to dress up for a day spent at home. House shoes or slippers can also be a way to provide warmth and comfort throughout the day.
4) Warm Comfort Meals
From a culinary perspective, hygge is about giving yourself a break from the demands of healthy living, but taking time to bake, savor, and enjoy the process of it. Now, this doesn’t mean you should throw out your healthy eating habits. It’s the idea of letting yourself live a little and enjoy what you love without any guilt.
5) Life’s Small Indulgences
Indulge in life’s finer things by reading a book, playing board games, watching a movie, chatting with friends and family, etc. All of these indulgences are low cost but high in reward for making you feel more connected to yourself and to those around you. It costs little to nothing when enjoying the simple things in life.
Hygge is the art of creating intimacy with your home, friends, and self. It’s about appreciating the simple pleasures in life, which all can be accomplished on a small budget. This kind of lifestyle ideology is a way to practice sincere self-care in ways that feel personal to you.
Sending you and yours all the comfiest and happiest wishes this winter season.
xx,
