ADVICE IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY
ADVICE IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN NYC
The concrete jungle, the city that never sleeps, and the city of dreams are all nicknames for a little strip of land known as New York City. This is a place I hold near and dear to my heart. After moving here for college in 2017, I have been acclimating to the city life ever since. There are a lot of mixed emotions when it comes to describing what it’s like to live in a city that will nourish and love you— but also chew you up and spit you out all in the same day.
Obviously, this is all from personal experience and everyone will have different opinions. Yet, I wanted to help shed some light and help mentally prepare anyone who is interested in moving to NYC. Get out those pens and notepads, because I’m about to give you all the advice I wish someone gave to me before moving to NYC.
Tip #1:
Everyone walks fast on the streets and you will get trampled if you stop to “smell the roses” in the middle of morning rush hour.
Tip #2
New York City will always provide you with what you need at any point in your life. It is the city of unexpected and endless opportunity— just be ready to work for it.
Tip #3
Be more afraid of the bikers than the cars— bikers have no mercy and go through red lights as if it’s their job. ALWAYS look both ways even when you think you’re safe.
Tip #4
Find your local bodega ASAP!! They will be your most loyal ally in the city. From early mornings to late nights, rain or shine… finding a local bodega is a must.
Tip #5
Get a “dollar slice” of NYC pizza. You’re welcome.
Tip #6
Trader Joe’s is cheaper than Whole Foods. Farmer’s markets have great produce that’s worth making the haul. Gristedes is a last resort. The produce vendors on the street have THE BEST prices— it’s good quality produce but be aware that it spoils quickly.
Tip #7
Familiarize yourself with the concept that you are among cockroaches, rats, and mice on a daily basis. And yes, it is most likely you will see one of these critters in your apartment if you live in the city. Even if you don’t see them, they’re lurking around somewhere.
Tip #8
You will definitely see celebrities randomly around the city (mostly in SoHo or LES). Word of advice… admire from afar and don’t ask for a picture unless it’s your idol.
Tip #9
Cocktails and glasses of wine are more expensive at restaurants than if you were to buy a bottle from the liquor store. Paying higher prices for a drink is the norm for the majority of establishments in NYC. Never thought I would justify a $15 cosmopolitan, but here we are.☺
Tip #10
Everyone needs a break from the city now and then, the craziness is a lot to deal with 24/7. Take a vacation to recharge and appreciate a different way of life. Regardless of the amount of time away you spent or beautiful places you’ve seen, when returning from your getaway and seeing the city skyline… you’ll know you’re officially home.
If you take the leap and decide to move— buckle up and prepare for a wild ride. Who knows, maybe we’ll even see each other on the street one day. Fingers crossed.
New York City is enchanting, raw, and full of life. It’s a place that boasts the phrase “work hard and play harder”. Yet, it’s easy to get lost in the midst of all the craziness and fun. Find a solid friend group that will help ground you when necessary. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And lastly, do not forget to sit back, relax, and enjoy your surroundings. YOU’RE IN NYC, BABY!!
xx,
Iz
